The summer is the best season to enjoy all the sun and outdoor activities with your beloved Yorkie and have a lot of fun.

However, there are some situations in this hot season, that might endanger your dog.

This is why we are going to give you some useful information about how to keep your Yorkie safe in the summer.

Heat can be dangerous for both humans and dogs

We can witness very hot days in the summer, so exercising and daily walks with your Yorkie should be done early in the mornings or late in the evenings.

After all, every dog can overheat in the hot weather because of their coat and this can lead to heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.

Always keep an eye on your Yorkie for symptoms like glazed eyes, heavy panting, staggering gait, rapid pulse, deep purple or red tongue and vomiting.

If some of these symptoms are present, the first thing you should do is to lower the dog’s body temperature.

Bring your pet in shade or in a cold place and apply cool water or over its entire body.

Don’t use ice or cold water!

You should lower your dog’s temperature gradually without causing shock.

You can only give it an ice cube to lick.

After that, you should take your pet to the vet, because the heat stroke could lead to other complications later.

Make sure that your pet is resting in a shady spot, not under the sunrays.

Shelters, are not a good spot if they are under the sun, because they can trap the heat inside.

And last, but not least, give your Yorkie fresh and cool water regularly.

Walking in a hot summer day

Also, keep in mind that the hot sand, asphalt or every other surface can burn the paws of your Yorkie.

It is a good idea to check the pavement before letting your dog walk on it.

This might seem silly for some people, but it really helps.

If the surface is too hot for you to keep your hand on, then it is too hot for the paws of the dog too.

If walking the Yorkie is necessary, you can let it walk only on grass or shady pavement.

Never leave your dog in the car, no matter for how long you will be absent

When the weather is warm the temperature inside the car coupe can rise significantly in a matter of single minutes, even when the car is parked under the shade.

As it is the case with the babies, cats and dogs too cannot be left inside the car.

Even if you leave your Yorkie for a couple of minutes, it can suffer from heat exhaustion or even heat stroke and die.

So we advise you to be smart and think twice before you leave anybody in the car alone, even if it for a short period of time – do not underestimate the heat.

Keep your place cool, especially at noon

It is always a good idea to keep your house cool or at least the room where your Yorkie stays the most.

If you have to go to work and your pet is home alone, you might consider leaving the air conditioner on and close the curtains.

If you do not own an air conditioner you might want to open windows to move the air around the place or at least turn a fan on.

Never leave your Yorkie alone outside

When you get out for a walk, never leave your pet alone.

You might miss for a minute some symptoms indicating heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Monitor the Yorkie all the time and do not let it separate from you.

Always bring cool and fresh water outside and when needed, give some to your buddy.

You can even add some ice cubes in the water when you can.

It is a good idea to have a Dog water bottle with you.

Keep all insects and bugs away from the dog

They can carry different diseases and can cause health problems of your dog.

Also, if you let the dog play outside in the yard, keep it safe from different pesticides or fertilizers because they make the lawn look great, but are dangerous for the pets.

Watch the Yorkie for overheating signs

Your dog cannot speak, so you cannot expect to tell you when it does not feel good.

In the hot weather just keep an eye on it and watch carefully for any or some of these symptoms:

– Rapid heartbead;
– Heavy panting;
– Troubled breathing;
– Heavy drooling;
– Dizziness;
– Dark tongue or gums;
– Agitation;
– Weakness.

One or more of these symptoms are not a good sign so it will be a good idea to take your Yorkie to the veterinarian right away.

Also, your dog might get dehydrated. It will be great if you know these symptoms also.

They are:

– Lethargy;
– Depression;
– Sunken eyes;
– Dry mouth.

If you suspect that your Yorkie is dehydrated, just try giving it more water – cool and fresh.

If the symptoms stay, you should visit the veterinarian.

Cut the Yorkie’s hair if it is necessary

If you find necessary to cut your dog’s hair, you can do it, but have some things in mind:

Do not cut too much of the coat, because this will expose the dogs’ skin directly to the sunrays and it can burn easily.

Do not forget that the coat is like an isolation from the external environment and by keeping it healthy and clean could be enough in most cases.

But the short hair is easier to maintain and if you think it will be better that way, cut some of the hair.

Always give your Yorkie access to fresh water and shade

In the summer, dogs can get much thirsty than people because water is the only way that they can cool down.

As a pet owner, your job is simple but responsible – give your Yorkie access to fresh water and change the water regularly.

If you cannot do the last bit, you can add some ice cubes into the water, that way it will stay cool for much longer.

Sunscreen is another thing to consider

In the summer most of us need less or more sunscreen to protect our skin.

But if your Yorkshire terrier is with short hair, you might want to consider applying some sunscreen too.

This way you will protect your dog from nasty sunburns.

If you are not sure what type of sunscreen to use here is a quick suggestion:

Leave in conditioner with sunscreen – it will also help you groom your yokie and keep its hair healthy and tangle-free.

Now the only thing that is left is not to forget to apply the sunscreen to your dogs’ skin every time you take it for a walk in the hot summer days.

If you are going out early in the morning or late at evening, do not apply sunscreen to your dog because it is not that hot.

If your Yorkie love swimming, let him cool in the water, but always keep an eye on it.

Even the best swimmer can have troubles in the water, so watch out. If you do that, we promise that beaching with your best pet friend will be great life experience.

Keeping your Yorkie or any other dog safe in the summer is not that hard.

You just have to be more thoughtful and pay more attention to your hairy buddy.
