500 Fun Yorkie Names For Your Dog

Choosing the right Yorkie name can feel like the most important decision in your early relationship with your new dog. You are planning on spending the next 15+ years with this little one, so pick a name that you’re going to love and that fits your Yorkie.

I’ve met thousands of dogs in my life and I can honestly say that a unique or well-fitting name makes a dog stand out from the rest. Don’t be afraid to change a name if it’s not working for you. These names work great for adopted Yorkies as well as those being selected as puppies.

What’s My Name?

Can You Change A Yorkie’s Name?

Absolutely! Names aren’t set in stone, in my opinion. I’ve owned over a dozen dogs in my life and, with the exception of one Doogie (that I got as a puppy), I’ve changed almost all of their names once they became part of my family. In every case the dog learned its new name and would come when called.

My oldest dog right now, Bailey, came to my home with the name Biscuit. It took a half-dozen tries before I settled on a name that my dog responded to and that I liked. Now it’s like she was never anyone else.

Can A Yorkie Understand Its Name?

Yes, Yorkies can understand their names. The ability of a dog to recognize and respond to its name is a part of its understanding of human language cues. Here are some key points about how dogs understand their names:

  1. Conditioned Response: Dogs learn their names through repetition and association. When you consistently use a name while interacting with them, especially in combination with positive experiences like petting, playing, or treats, they learn to associate that sound with attention and rewards.
  2. Not Language Understanding: It’s important to note that dogs do not understand human language in the way we do. They respond to their names not because they understand the concept of a “name,” but because they have learned that responding to this specific sound is beneficial.
  3. Tone and Clarity Matter: Yorkies are more likely to respond to the tone of your voice rather than the name itself. They respond better to names that are distinct from everyday language and other commands, making it easier for them to distinguish when they are being called.
  4. Consistency is Key: Consistent use of the name in a specific context (such as calling them for food or walks) reinforces their understanding and response.
  5. Recognition vs. Understanding: While dogs can recognize their names, they don’t have a self-aware understanding of themselves having a name in the human sense. They simply learn that when they hear a certain sound (their name), it often means that human interaction, often positive, is forthcoming.
  6. Training and Socialization: Regular training and socialization can enhance a dog’s ability to recognize and respond to its name. This is part of basic obedience training and is crucial for their ability to follow commands and interact safely with humans and other animals.

What Are Best Practices When Choosing Your Yorkie’s Name?

  • Choose a name that you like to say; it should reflect how you feel about your dog. For example, my tiny 5 lb Yorkie was called Binky. I loved to say that word and it reflected the cuteness of my little one.
  • I prefer two-syllable names. It makes it easier for your dog to hear its name. It also sounds more pleasant when calling your dog. I think one sylabble names often sound harsh when you raise your voice.
  • Don’t be afraid to change the name if it doesn’t seem right after a week or two. It doesn’t really matter when the right name is chosen. It just matters that you get the right fit for you and your Yorkie.
